A DAUGHTER’S NAME: Grandma Soja’s Nephew Named his Daughter After Her

“This boy has never forgotten me” — Grandma Soja recounts how her nephew honoured her by naming his daughter after her.

Retired Lieutenant Colonel Georgina Mensah, popularly known as “Grandma Soja,” may not have children of her own, but she says the love and gratitude she has received from family and people she helped have given her a different kind of legacy.

In an emotional reflection on her life, Grandma Soja revealed that her nephew named his daughter after her.

The retired military officer explained that she has never married and does not have a child of her own, but she has invested deeply in the lives of people around her.

“I’m not married. I don’t have a child. But the good I do to people, they remember,” she said.

One of the people who has continued to remember her kindness is her nephew, her younger sister’s son.

Grandma Soja recalled helping him at a time when he needed support while she was working at the US Embassy.

She said she gave him $1,000 and even helped him with a suitcase when he was preparing to travel to Germany.

Years later, she discovered that he had not forgotten what she had done for him.

“This boy has never forgotten me. He has named a daughter after me,” she said.

The gesture has become particularly meaningful to Grandma Soja because, according to her, she never helped people with the expectation that they would repay her.

“I do good without knowing I have done it,” she said.

Her nephew has also continued to show appreciation. Grandma Soja said he later gave her $1,000 and sends her $100 every month.

For Grandma Soja, the story is another reminder that acts of kindness can live on long after the moment has passed.
