Turning 40 was never going to be just another birthday for Ghanaian rapper Darlington Agyekum, popularly known as Dr Cryme.
Speaking with Kafui Dey, the “Twipop” pioneer revealed that while the number 40 initially felt like just another change in age, it quickly became a wake-up call to focus on legacy.
“In my mind, I still feel fresh and young,” he laughed. “But then I just woke up one time and realized the numbers had changed from 10, 20, 30… now it’s 40.”
Rather than throw a lavish birthday celebration immediately, Dr Cryme spent the day in thanksgiving.
The real celebration, however, was reserved for August 1, where he combined his birthday party with the official launch of the General Foundation.
Unlike foundations that focus on a single cause, Dr Cryme says his organisation will take a broader approach.
“We’re going to touch health, sports, education, mentorship… everything generally”, he said
But the biggest announcement was his commitment to 40 impact projects.
“I think I have to do something to signify the 40 and beyond,” he explained. “I’m going to be doing 40 projects.”
He admitted many foundations begin with donations to announce their presence, but his team wants people to first understand the vision before the projects become visible.
“I want people to know this foundation is here to stay. It’s not just about me; it’s about the whole team taking it upon ourselves to achieve these 40 projects.”
For Dr Cryme, turning 40 isn’t about slowing down. It’s about making every year count.
