Mzbel has opened up about her decision not to marry, saying she enjoys the freedom of living life on her own terms and does not feel she is missing anything by being single.
Speaking to Kafui Dey, the Ghanaian musician and entrepreneur said she does not want the restrictions she associates with marriage to determine how she lives her everyday life.
For Mzbel, freedom is particularly important.
“I don’t want to be living with somebody,” she said.
She explained that sharing a home with a partner would mean both people having to constantly adjust their lifestyles to accommodate each other.
And that, she suggested, is not the life she wants.
“I have to adjust certain things to please somebody. Somebody has to adjust certain things to please me. It’s a no, no, no, no.”
Mzbel said she prefers being able to wake up when she wants, make her own decisions and organize her life without having to meet expectations that come with marriage.
“Me, I like to live carefree,” she said.
The singer also rejected the idea that an unmarried woman necessarily lacks companionship or intimacy.
According to her, being single does not mean she cannot have a romantic relationship when she wants one.
“If I want to have a guy around, I can have a guy around,” she said.
She stressed that she does not see marriage as the only way to experience companionship or intimacy.
“If I want to have that fun, I can easily do it,” she said.
Mzbel also pushed back against the idea that she is unhappy because she is unmarried.
She said she does not sit around wishing she had a husband and does not feel that marriage is something she needs in order to feel complete.
“I’m not miserable,” she said, explaining that she can live the kind of life she wants without having a man permanently around.
Her comments come from a perspective she says is shaped by her desire for independence.
Rather than seeing marriage as an essential destination, Mzbel appears to view it as a personal choice that should be made by people who genuinely want that experience.
“If people want to marry, I mean, like, you have to marry. You experience it,” she said.
But for herself, she has made her position clear.
“I don’t miss having a man. I don’t want a man around to even miss it.”
For Mzbel, being unmarried is therefore not something she sees as a gap in her life.
