LOS ANGELES — It remains one of the most unusual and electrifying encounters in modern cultural diplomacy: the day the "King of Pop" met the leader of the Ghanaian revolution.
During a state visit to the United States that included stops in Texas and California, global pop icon Michael Jackson officially met with President Jerry John Rawlings.
The highlight of the packed California event occurred when Jackson unexpectedly presented Rawlings with a magnificent ceremonial sword.
Fritz Baffour, who was on the scene filming the historic exchange, recalled the palpable tension and excitement in the room. The sudden appearance of a weapon in close proximity to the Head of State briefly sent shockwaves through the security detail.
"When the sword was coming, the bodyguards themselves lost their composure—they were so impressed," Baffour laughed.
Decades later, the footage remains a rare testament to Rawlings' international charismatic appeal, capturing a historic crossover between two global icons that represents a unique moment in Ghana's diplomatic history. "We had a great time," Baffour added softly. "I miss him."
