For artist Moh Awudu, success has come with a bittersweet feeling. The recognition, the opportunities and the moments he once dreamed of are achievements he wishes his parents could fully experience with him.
His father, the man who supported his artistic journey from the beginning, has been able to witness some of those moments. But his mother is not around to see how far her son has come and that remains one of his deepest regrets.
“I miss them not being here to enjoy what I can,” Moh told Kafui Dey during an interview, reflecting on the absence of his parents.
While his father has celebrated his achievements, calling him often to express his pride, Moh says he longs for the chance to do the same for his mother.
“But I wish my mom is around so that I can take really good care of her and make her enjoy, make her proud,” he said.
For Moh, that wish is not only about sharing his success with her but also about giving back to the woman who shaped his life.
He believes she would have been proud of the man he has become.
“I know wherever she is, she’s proud because my dad told me he’s proud of me all the time. He calls me and tells me he’s proud of me,” he said.
His father’s pride has been a constant source of encouragement. The same man who bought him his first paintbrushes when he decided to pursue art has remained his biggest supporter and unofficial promoter.
“My dad gives me work,” Moh recalled with a smile. “My dad tells his friends, ‘My son does this. He does that.’”
He described his father as someone who celebrates life and never misses an opportunity to celebrate his son.
“My dad is a hype man. My dad is a guy. He loves life,” he said.
Behind Moh Awudu’s artistic journey is a story of sacrifice, belief and family support. His father saw potential in him when he was still finding his way and invested in his dream with something as simple as a few brushes.
Today, as Moh’s work takes him places and earns him recognition, the success is also a reminder of the people he wishes could be beside him.
His father gets to cheer him on. But in every achievement, there remains a quiet wish, that his mother was here to see it too.
