NEW IDENTITY: Mzbel Reveals Plans to Officially Change Her Identity and Make the New Name Part of Her Story

Mzbel, born Belinda Nana Ekua Amoah has revealed plans to make a major change to her personal identity, telling Kafui Dey that she intends to make the change official on her birthday.

The revelation came towards the end of the lengthy interview, when the conversation turned to her background and the different sides of her family.

Mzbel indicated that she would be taking on a new name and would have to make corresponding changes to her official documents.

“I will make it official on my birthday. I will have a new name and I will be a pure Ga because I speak Ga better than any other language ,” she said.

She added that the change would require her to update her passport.

The discussion also touched on her mixed family background, with Mzbel explaining that her mother’s and father’s sides come from different backgrounds.

Earlier in the interview, she had already spoken about feeling caught between the two sides of her family.

She explained that her mother’s side expected her to identify with her father’s side, while her father’s side had expectations connected to her mother’s side.

“So I am in between,” she said.

That sense of being between different family identities appears to have influenced how she thinks about her name and identity.

Mzbel previously explained that she chose the name Mzbel herself when she was younger because she did not like the name Belinda.

She said that although she knew Belinda had a beautiful meaning, she simply did not feel connected to it.

“I didn’t like Belinda,” she said.

After leaving the School of Languages, she said she decided to change her name.

She wanted something that felt more local and personally meaningful.
