That quiet confidence has shaped his approach to life and music. Turning 40, he admits, brought a new mindset, one built around purpose, urgency and careful decisions.
At first glance, Twipop pioneer, Dr Cryme does not look like the kind of person who would command a stage, create viral anthems, or leave a lasting imprint on Ghana’s music landscape. He is calm. Almost too calm.
Before interviews, he is usually the man sitting quietly in a corner observing, thinking and processing everything around him. But the moment the cameras roll or the music starts playing, a different side emerges. The quiet man transforms into the performer audiences have come to know and love.
For Dr Cryme, who recently celebrated turning 40, that contrast between his quiet personality and his explosive creativity has become part of his identity. “Sometimes when people see me before I come on interviews, it looks like I’m in my own world. I’m quiet, I’m brainstorming and thinking. But when they see me either on an interview or even on stage, it is like a whole different mood,” he told Kafui Dey.

Turning 40, he admits, brought a new mindset, one built around purpose, urgency and careful decisions. “When we were younger, we were always anticipating that when I turn 18, I will do this. When I turn 20, I’ll do this,” he reflected. “But with 40, it is a different mentality. You realize you are not growing any younger anymore. This time around, it is about packing and getting things done.”
For him, every move now has to count. “It is about making hay while the sun shines. Every move has to be well calculated because you might not have the next 20, 30 or 40 times to do it.”
That maturity is reflected in his recent music releases, including his single “Holy”, a song that captures the complexity of his personality, the quiet thinker and the energetic entertainer existing in one person.
The song, according to Dr Cryme, is built around a metaphor. It represents how people often underestimate what lies beneath a calm exterior.
“I think I get that thing with myself sometimes. People see me before I come on interviews and I’m just quiet, but when they see me perform, it is a different energy,” he explained.
The inspiration behind many of his songs, he revealed, comes from paying attention to people and the stories around him. While some assume every song is a direct reflection of his personal experiences, Dr Cryme says his creative process goes beyond himself.
“I listen to a lot of things. Sometimes boys are conversing and having conversations, and I’m like, ‘Okay, how can I tell this story without mentioning your name?’”
That ability to observe and transform everyday experiences into music has been one of his greatest strengths.
“Most of the songs and hits that are coming out come from experiences and stories. It is you a little bit, it is me a little bit. There is always a story in my songs”, he said
This storytelling ability is what helped create some of his memorable records, including “Kill Me Shy” and “Chocolate Vanilla”. But Dr Cryme says not every love song comes from personal heartbreak or romance.
Sometimes, it is simply about understanding emotions from another person’s perspective. Speaking about “Kill Me Shy”, he explained that he was not necessarily telling his own love story. Instead, he became the voice helping people express feelings they struggled to put into words.
“I only place myself into other people’s shoes,” he said. “I said in the intro, ‘Fellas, sing the song for the one you love.’ The women are saying this is what they want to hear. You have hired yourself a lawyer, and that’s me. So tell them these words.”
It is this ability to step into different worlds, listen carefully and create from those experiences that has made Dr Cryme stand out. Even his previous release, “Our Father”, followed the same pattern of creating conversations around familiar ideas. The song was not just a prayer, but a personal conversation with God.
“The truth is, it was more like a plea to God,” he said. “I’m like, let’s not see God as somebody too uptight or somebody too scary that we cannot even go to Him.”
Through his music, Dr Cryme continues to challenge expectations. The man who appears reserved and composed carries within him a world of stories, emotions and creativity waiting to be unleashed. And perhaps that is the secret behind the quiet genius, the calmest person in the room is often the one paying the closest attention.
