Former Ghanaian military leader Jerry John Rawlings could laugh, think deeply and show kindness but according to Dr Isaac Kofi Adjei-Maafo, there was one thing he simply could not tolerate.
Lies.
Dr Adjei-Maafo, who served in Rawlings’ government as PNDC Secretary (Minister) for Agriculture from 1985 to 1986 offered a personal glimpse into the temperament of the former leader during an interview with Kafui Dey.
He described Rawlings as a kind man and a deep thinker, recalling a side of the former leader that was not always visible to the public.
But beneath that calm exterior was a strong intolerance for dishonesty.
“Lies” were what made Rawlings angry, Dr Adjei-Maafo revealed.
He said Rawlings could not stand lies and would become upset when confronted with them.
The revelation came as Dr Adjei-Maafo reflected on his experiences working with the former head of state.
His description also showed a more relaxed side of Rawlings.
According to Dr Adjei-Maafo, boxing could make Rawlings laugh, offering a glimpse of the man behind the political figure.
It was a contrast to the stern image often associated with Rawlings during his years in power.
For Dr Adjei-Maafo, however, the former leader’s intolerance for lies was particularly memorable.
“He could not stand lies,” he said.
