Retired Lieutenant Colonel Georgina Mensah has opened up about how becoming pregnant while in Form Four disrupted her education at St Louis Secondary School before she eventually rebuilt her life and pursued a career that took her into the military.
Mensah, popularly known as “Grandma Soja,” shared the experience during an interview with Kafui Dey as she reflected on her early life and education.
She had earlier described herself as academically strong while growing up and recalled being among students trusted by teachers to assist weaker students.
But her education was not without setbacks.
Retired Lieutenant Colonel Mensah recalled that she was caught helping other students during an examination, an incident that affected her academic progress.
“I passed but I didn’t get my certificate because I was caught giving assistance during the exam,” she said.
She said the incident also led to a difficult confrontation with her mother.
“She nearly killed me,” Mensah recalled of her mother’s reaction, describing the strict discipline she experienced at home.
Despite the challenges, she continued to pursue her education and eventually travelled to Germany, an experience that later became connected to her decision to join the military.
Retired Lieutenant Colonel Mensah has previously explained that she became attracted to military life after experiencing the discipline and structure associated with it.
“I like the army way of life. It was nice going to the offices. Even now, it is still very interesting, you know,” she said.
Her path eventually led her to apply to the Ghana Military Academy when an opportunity opened for university graduates in different professional categories.
She was selected and endured the demanding training required of cadets, later becoming a commissioned officer.
Her military career eventually took her into international peacekeeping, including assignments with the United Nations.
