Apparently, sports broadcasters in Kumasi have their own transfer market and the deals are astonishing.

As Kafui Dey asked Godfred Akoto Boafo which media personalities deserved to be interviewed next, the conversation unexpectedly drifted into the fiercely competitive world of Kumasi sports radio.

Akoto Boafo recommended veteran broadcaster Joe Laka, describing him as a walking archive of Ghanaian sports journalism.

“A lot of people learned the job from him,” he said, praising the broadcaster’s decades of experience and institutional memory.

But it was his comments about award-winning analyst Bright Kankam Boadu that left Kafui Dey visibly amused.

Akoto Boafo revealed that the respected broadcaster had recently completed what he jokingly described as a “multi-million cedi transfer” within Kumasi’s media landscape.

The deal, he explained, came with one eye-catching incentive.

“They bought him a new SUV.”Kafui Dey laughed in disbelief.

“So serious transfer?” Akoto Boafo smiled.

“They bought him an SUV before when he moved. He’s given that SUV back, and they’ve bought him another one.”

“SUV to SUV,” Kafui Dey joked.

“As for them, they don’t play,” Akoto Boafo replied.

Behind the humour lies an interesting reality.

While many assume Ghana’s media industry offers few incentives, Kumasi’s fiercely competitive sports broadcasting scene appears willing to spend significantly to secure top talent.
