AWARDS HEARTBREAK: Ofori Amponsah Recalls His Friends Abandoning Him at an Awards Show After He Lost Every Category

Ghanaian singer, songwriter and producer Samuel Ofori Amponsah has recalled the painful night he attended an awards ceremony with high expectations, only to leave without winning a single award despite receiving multiple nominations.

The award-winning Ghanaian highlife singer said the disappointment was so intense that the friends who accompanied him eventually left after it became clear he would not win any of the categories.

Speaking to Kafui Dey, Ofori Amponsah said he had expected the night to be a major triumph because of the success of his music at the time.

“I still was great song. But you know the reason why,” he recalled.

He said he had five nominations and kept waiting for the final category, convinced that he would finally hear his name announced as the winner.

But that moment never came.

“The last one came, all my guests left me. They ran away because I didn’t win anything,” he said.

‘Forget awards. I’m coming to do music’

Ofori Amponsah said the experience forced him to rethink his attitude towards awards and recognition.

According to him, he decided to stop making awards the measure of his success and instead concentrate on making music.

“That very day was like the most craziest day I had because the expectation was big. Everybody thought for win I couldn’t win,” he said.

“So I said to myself, you know what? Forget awards. I’m coming to do music. Forget any awards. That’s it.”

He said he returned to work, wrote more songs and continued building his career.

The decision would later prove significant, as he went on to experience one of the most successful award nights of his career, winning seven awards in a single night, including Artist of the Year.

“I forgot of the year because I had been preparing myself for that very moment,” he said.

“So when it came it was like, you know, I was worked for it and it came.”
