While many songs top the charts briefly before fading away, "Kill Me Shy" has stood the test of time
Speaking with Kafui Dey, Dr Cryme reflected on the remarkable journey of the song that continues to resonate with audiences nearly 15 years after winning Vodafone Ghana Music Awards' Best Hiplife Song in 2012.
"It feels great to realize we've done a great job, and we're still doing it”, Dr Cryme remarked.
The hit appeared on his 2011 debut album Finally Finally, a 20-track project packed with fan favourites. What surprises many fans is that the song wasn't an instant blockbuster.
According to the rapper and Twipop pioneer, "Kill Me Shy" was unofficially released in 2008 but spent nearly two years quietly circulating before exploding nationwide.
"The song came out in 2008... it grew on the people before it became a major hit in 2010”, he said.
One of the key turning points came through an unexpected chain of events. A woman named Yaa Safori reportedly heard the song playing at a nightclub and became so captivated that she asked the DJ to replay it repeatedly throughout the night.
Instead of waiting through an entire CD playlist, she instructed the DJ to insert "Kill Me Shy" after every few tracks. Convinced the song deserved a wider audience, she passed it on to radio personality DJ Armani, who began giving it airplay.
"The first time I heard it on the radio was through DJ Armani... it was beautiful because I realized the song had really gotten there”, he remarked.
By then, people were already telling Dr Cryme they had heard the record in different places, even before he fully appreciated how far it had travelled.
"I realized the song had come out, so then I put more energy into it."
