Renowned sports journalist, Godfred Akoto Boafo says his campaign against poor-quality artificial football pitches has come at a personal cost.
Speaking candidly, the veteran journalist revealed that his outspoken criticism has attracted organised attempts to discredit him.
“I’ve received a lot of grief,” he admitted.
“Some people were paid to say all kinds of things against me.”
Despite the backlash, Akoto Boafo insists he has no intention of backing down.
“I’m not on a campaign to ruin anybody’s business. My interest is Ghana.”
He stressed that his criticism is not directed at artificial pitches in general but at the poor-quality surfaces that have spread across the country in recent years.
According to him, too many people have interpreted his campaign as an attack on businesses rather than a plea for better sporting infrastructure.
“I have not said astro turfs are bad. I’m saying the quality of the astro turfs we have laid in this country are bad.”
For Akoto, remaining silent would mean ignoring a problem that could affect generations of young footballers. “I won’t stop speaking”, he concluded.
