Black Stars team doctor Dr. Prince Pambo has advised Ghana’s technical team to prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup without Mohammed Kudus, describing it as the most prudent approach given the uncertainty surrounding the midfielder’s injury.
Speaking in an interview with Kafui Dey, Dr. Pambo said Kudus’ injury was a major setback for Ghana’s World Cup ambitions, considering the player’s importance to both the national team and world football.
“Kudus is a very significant member of world football. If the world is supposed to name 20 players they want to see at that stage, Mohammed would be one of them. So for a country like Ghana to hear that such a player is picking up an injury around this time, it was quite devastating,” he said.
Dr. Pambo disclosed that the Ghana Football Association is still awaiting official communication from Kudus’ club regarding the full extent of the injury and the expected recovery timeline.
Despite hopes of a return before the tournament, he urged the Black Stars technical handlers to avoid building their plans around the possibility of the midfielder’s availability.
“I believe the coaches or the technical handlers of the Black Stars will probably want to plan without him. It might be the wisest thing to do by any coach or any experienced coach,” Dr. Pambo stated.
He noted that discussions regarding treatment options are ongoing, with both surgical and non-surgical interventions reportedly under consideration.
Kudus sustained the injury in January 2026 during his season with Tottenham Hotspur. The club has yet to issue an official update on a potential return date.
Meanwhile, Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz has named a 28-man provisional squad for Ghana’s World Cup preparation camp and international friendly against Wales, with Kudus left out of the list.
While the final 26-man squad for the tournament is yet to be announced, questions remain over whether Kudus can make a remarkable recovery in time to earn a place in Ghana’s World Cup squad.
