Ghanaian musician Samuel Ofori Amponsah has recalled spending several years in what he described as the “wilderness” before veteran musician Daddy Lumba finally gave him a breakthrough opportunity.
Ofori Amponsah said his journey began in the early 1990s when he recorded his first songs, but the recordings were never released.
According to him, the songs were recorded in 1993 after he had established a connection with Daddy Lumba, who listened to his work and encouraged him to continue pursuing music.
“I forgot about the music altogether because we recorded the songs in 1993 and then the songs never came out,” he told Kafui Dey.
He returned to the studio in 1997 and recorded again, but the material did not meet Lumba’s expectations.
Ofori Amponsah said he subsequently spent several years trying to establish himself in the music industry, a period he described as being in the “wilderness.”
“What was happening in the wilderness?” Kafui Dey asked.
“Still trying to believe that one day I will come out,” Ofori Amponsah replied.
He said he spent almost every day in the studio during that period, although people around him gradually lost confidence in his ability to succeed as a musician.
“I was always in the in the studio. People stopped believing in me,” he said.
With his music career yet to take off, Ofori Amponsah returned to his family’s salt business and became involved in distributing salt across the Ashanti Region.
He said he remained determined to pursue music and eventually decided in 1999 that he would make a breakthrough that year.
“I just said, ‘This year you will come out,’” he recalled.
That same year, following a disagreement with his father and the collapse of plans for him to attend university in Dubai, Ofori Amponsah decided to invest money meant for his education into his music career.
He returned to the studio and recorded new songs.
According to him, it was shortly after this that Daddy Lumba contacted him after listening to his recordings and expressed interest in working with him.
However, Lumba proposed that Ofori Amponsah travel to Germany to record.
The opportunity marked a major turning point in Ofori Amponsah’s music career after years of uncertainty and repeated attempts to establish himself in the industry.
