Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey has opened up about the extreme disciplinary methods used by one of his youth coaches, revealing that players were once cut on their hands with a knife after losing a football match.

Speaking to Kafui Dey, Partey described his first coach, known as Sam "Alos," as extremely strict and determined to maintain a winning culture.

Asked about the toughest punishment he received, Partey said: "I remember we lost one game and then he cut at the back of our hand with a knife."

The Ghana international said the punishment was meted out to every member of the team.

"Everyone," Partey said when asked if all the players received the same treatment.

According to Partey, the coach believed his team was the best and expected victory in every match.

"We are the best. We have to win every game," he recalled.

Partey also recounted another incident when players sneaked out to dance at a funeral instead of resting after training.

When they returned, the coach was waiting for them.

"He made us stand to the next day," Partey said. "We stood the whole night."

While such punishments would be unacceptable today, Partey acknowledged that the strict discipline contributed to his development as a footballer.

"Now it's funny, but that time it was tough," he said.
