Charles Baako Kweku Nyatsui Moses believes Ghanaian schools need stronger discipline and has called for the return of corporal punishment, but with clear limits.
The 99-year-old educator said the presence of the cane in classrooms during his time helped students understand the importance of good behaviour.
“In our time too, caning is good,” he said.
However, he stressed that punishment should not be used excessively or unfairly.
“They should bring the cane but not cane them anyhow. They should cane them judiciously.”
Mr Moses explained that the cane itself served as a deterrent because students knew there were consequences for misconduct.
“When you see the cane lying there, you will behave. It is just talking to you.”
He said discipline was an important part of education during his era and helped shape students’ attitudes towards authority and responsibility.
The former teacher believes that while discipline remains necessary, punishment must always be applied carefully.
“Not anyhow. Judicious,” he emphasised.
His comments come amid ongoing national discussions about discipline in schools and the best approaches to managing student behaviour.
