RAP CAPITAL: Why Tema Keeps Producing Ghana’s Biggest Rap Stars

If Ghana had to crown a capital of rap, Dr Cryme believes there would be little debate: Tema has earned that title.

Speaking to Kafui Dey, the rapper, born Darlington Agyekum, traced the city’s dominance in hip-hop not to luck, but to its unique history.

“Everybody’s creative in their own way,” he said. “Tema is an industrial city. People came from different cultures for different purposes, and everybody brought something with them.”

That melting pot, he explained, produced a generation of artistes who weren’t afraid to sound different.

Long before the current crop of stars emerged, Tema was already nurturing pioneers. Dr Cryme recalled growing up inspired by earlier names such as A. B. Crentsil and Jewel Ackah before later generations continued the city’s creative tradition.

“They weren’t just doing music,” he said. “They were creative in their own space. They knew how to stand out.”

He also proudly acknowledged his own family connection to Ghanaian music. His brother, R&B singer , deliberately chose a different musical direction at a time when everyone else seemed to be following the same path.

“My people like to take risks,” Dr Cryme smiled.

Even the long-standing debate over whether Tema or Dansoman (DC) produced better rappers drew an honest response.

According to him,Dansoman had no shortage of talent, with artists excelling across hip-hop and reggae. But Tema artists distinguished themselves through style.

“Rap is rap but it was the way we talked, the way we dressed, the way we presented ourselves. We knew how to package everything”, he explained.

For Dr Cryme, the habour city’s reputation wasn’t built overnight. It was forged over decades by artistes willing to be different, take risks and inspire those who came after them.
